Have a go. Your first task takes about 30 seconds.

This is a working spreadsheet. Click any cell, then type straight in or use the formula bar, and press Enter. Ellie will tell you if you've picked the wrong cell, typed the wrong formula, or forgotten the =. Wrong answers are free. That's how you learn.

Task 1 of 4 · target cell D2

Invoice INV-1041 is £1,200 net. Click D2 and write a formula for the VAT at 20%.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Is LearnExcel.co.uk really free, including the certificate?

Yes. Every lesson, exercise, mock test and certificate is free. No card, no trial and no signup to start. If that ever changes we'll say so clearly on this page first, and certificates already earned stay verified.

Is there Excel training for my specific job?

Yes. There are eight UK job tracks: NHS and healthcare admin, admin and office, project coordinators, accounting, bookkeeping and finance, HR and recruitment, schools, councils and charities, data and reporting, and retail and hospitality managers. Each uses realistic UK data, such as NHS rotas and RTT breach trackers, expenses with VAT, RAID logs with RAG status or rotas with labour %, so you practise the spreadsheets you'll actually be sent.

What's the best free alternative to learning Excel from YouTube videos?

LearnExcel.co.uk is a free, interactive alternative to generic Excel YouTube tutorials. Instead of watching, you complete short tasks in a spreadsheet in your browser and get instant feedback from Ellie, our elephant coach, including why an answer is wrong. You follow a structured route for your job and finish with a free certificate employers can verify.

Can I get a free Excel certificate for my CV in the UK?

Yes. When you finish your track you get a free certificate as a downloadable PDF plus a public verification link (learnexcel.co.uk/verify/ followed by a unique code). You choose what it shows: the track you completed, the level you reached, how many modules you completed, how many hours of hands-on practice you did and your top skills. Add it to your CV, LinkedIn and job applications. It is not a Microsoft certification and is not CPD accredited; it is verified evidence of your practical skills.

I'm changing career or starting a new role. Is learning Excel worth it?

Excel is asked for in a wide range of UK job adverts, including admin, NHS and public sector, finance, HR, operations and project coordination. Pick the track for the role you want, start from zero if you need to, and build up to the skills those job ads mean, with a certificate you can show at interview.

How long does it take?

Each exercise takes about two minutes, so a job track is 5–11 hours of hands-on practice and the full Basic-to-Advanced route is around 12. Progress saves after every exercise, so you can learn in lunch breaks and pick up where you left off.

Done zoning out? Start clicking in.

Skip the generic, largely irrelevant videos. Practise the Excel your job actually uses — free, with instant feedback guiding you through every step.

Want custom Excel training for your staff?

We build training around your own spreadsheets, systems and processes, and let you track your team's progress. Ideal for NHS trusts, councils, charities and growing businesses.
